How it works

Export from your chat apps, then point ChatAttic at the files

Export from the apps you use — WhatsApp Export chat, a Telegram JSON export, a Facebook/Instagram “Download your information” file, an Android SMS backup, or a copy of your Mac iMessage database — then point ChatAttic at the files, or a whole folder of them. It picks the right reader for each file, unpacks archives as it goes, and your originals are opened read-only and never touched.

It de-duplicates and groups by conversation

Every message is de-duplicated by its content and grouped by conversation, sorted by time — so exporting the same chat again adds nothing you already have. Overlapping exports, repeated backups, the same thread pulled from two phones: ChatAttic keeps one clean copy of each message and quietly drops the rest.

You get organized files you can read, search and add to

Clean, per-conversation files — nothing proprietary — that you can open, read and search straight away, and add to later. Export more chats down the road and point ChatAttic at the same archive again; it merges in only what's new. A large run is safe to stop or resume: progress is saved as it goes, and Cancel stops a run any time.

Are my chats uploaded anywhere?

No. ChatAttic is a desktop app. Your chats never leave your computer — there's no account, no cloud, and we couldn't see them if we wanted to.

Which apps does it read?

WhatsApp (the .txt and media .zip from Export chat, iOS and Android), iMessage (a copy of your Mac chat.db), Telegram (a Desktop JSON export), Facebook & Instagram Messenger (a “Download your information” JSON export), and Android SMS/MMS (an “SMS Backup & Restore” XML file). Drop any of them in and ChatAttic picks the right reader automatically.

Does re-exporting create duplicates?

No. Messages are de-duplicated by content, so re-running ChatAttic on the same chat only ever adds messages that are genuinely new. Overlapping exports and repeated backups collapse into one clean copy per message.

Subscription?
