How to back up WhatsApp chats before switching phones

A new phone is the moment people quietly lose years of messages. You assume the cloud backup has your back — and it does, right up until you switch from iPhone to Android, run out of iCloud space, or just want to actually read an old conversation. The cloud backup is a safety net for restoring WhatsApp, not an archive you own. Here's the difference, and how to make real copies before you hand the old phone over.

Why the cloud backup isn't the archive you think it is

WhatsApp's iCloud (iPhone) and Google Drive (Android) backups exist for one job: putting your chats back into WhatsApp on a new phone of the same platform. That's a narrower promise than it sounds:

• You can't read it. The backup is an opaque blob meant for WhatsApp to restore, not a file you can open and browse. There's no way to sit down and read a conversation out of it.
• It doesn't cross iPhone and Android. An iCloud backup can't restore onto an Android phone, and a Google Drive backup can't restore onto an iPhone. Switch platforms and the cloud backup is dead weight.
• It can vanish. Backups get overwritten on a schedule, and providers delete ones left untouched for a long stretch. If iCloud or Drive fills up, the backup can silently stop running.

Make real, portable copies with Export chat

The fix is the same built-in feature that powers everything else here: Export chat. It gives you a plain .txt transcript — every message with its date, time and sender — and, if you attach media, a .zip with the photos and videos too. Unlike the cloud backup, these are ordinary files that open on any computer and move between any phones.

• iPhone: open the chat → tap the contact or group name → Export Chat → choose With Media or Without Media.
• Android: open the chat → ⋮ menu → More → Export chat → choose to include media or not.

Keep the copies safe for the long term

Once the exports are off the phone, treat them like anything else you want to keep for years:

• Get them onto a real computer, not just another phone. A laptop or desktop with a proper folder is where an archive lives.
• Keep more than one copy — an external drive and the machine itself, at a minimum. Two copies in two places is the whole game.
• Store them as plain files, not inside an app, so you're never locked out by a subscription lapsing or a service shutting down.

De-duplication is what makes re-exporting safe

Here's the habit that actually protects your history: export again every time you switch phones, and again whenever a chat has grown. The problem is that each new export repeats everything you already saved — re-export a five-year group chat and you've got a second copy of all five years.

The answer is de-duplication at the message level. When each message is matched by its content, re-exporting the same chat adds only what's genuinely new and drops the rest. That's what turns "export before every phone" from a folder full of near-identical files into a single archive that just keeps growing cleanly — and it means you never have to guess which export is the good one.
